The color space CIE L, a, b - where CIE means International Commission on Illumination - or simply LAB, is the basic mode used by the ICC profiles. All the color chain elements will use the common L, a, b mode to communicate with each others under the control of the color management system and with the help of the ICC profiles.

'L' is the lightness, whereas 'A' ( green / magenta ) and 'B' (blue / yellow ) are the chromatic axes.
